| Rational Animal volunteers are accomplished
professionals who share a love for animals and donate
skills to projects in areas that include:
Visual Arts, Illustration & Design, TV, Radio, Film,
Photography, Internet Technology, Music, Copywriting,
Advertising, Public Relations & Market Research,
Project and Event Management and Strategic Planning.
Volunteers also work in areas that support Rational
Animal as an organization such as Bookkeeping, Volunteer
Management, Legal Advising, Fundraising and Grantwriting.
Volunteering for Rational Animal is a labor of love.
We work in teams to brainstorm about new and positive
ways to get out messages about how people can get involved
to help at-risk animals. We have fun in the process,
spinning out exciting new productions and contributing
to a future where no animals are at risk.

Susan Brandt
Susan brings her proclivity for unconventional television
programming to animal welfare and conservation initiatives
with the founding of Rational Animal.
Susan has managed the creative development and programming
of three start-up television channels originating in
Seattle, Washington. Her efforts at the University of
Washington lead to the creation of a new television
channel, the ResearchChannel (www.researchchannel.org),
a non-profit consortium of research universities involved
in “opening the ivory tower” by broadcasting
scientists as they talk about their research. While
in Seattle she co-hosted a TV series about the development
of the Internet, and was the first to bring University
of Washington’s mascot, the Husky, to TV audiences
in a series of promotional spots featuring a very talented
Husky. During her work in Seattle she received an award
for Excellence in Television Programming from the Alliance
for Community Media.
She received a scholarship to the School of International
Studies-Communication and Development Masters program
at Ohio University and graduated in 1992. During her
studies she received a Houk grant for her internship
at the Division for the Advancement of Women at the
United Nations, Vienna. She also interned at WNPB, Morgantown,
Virginia for the series States of Mind. Prior to her
graduate degree she studied at the University of California
Santa Cruz, Virginia Commonwealth University and Universita
per Stranieri, Perugia, Italy. She received an Italian
Language Achievement award and a Star Award from VCU
for achievements made post-graduation.
Susan loves to run, swim, do gymnastics and dreams of
some day having an animal sanctuary. Her love of animals
is inspired by her mother and grandmother and their
life-long efforts to rescue animals in need; her father
who introduced her to her love of snakes and wildlife
photography; her sisters Laura and Vanessa whose commitment
to animals is expressed in art and veterinary care;
her dog Jackie, a shelter rescue who overcame her early
experiences and blossomed into a beautiful individual;
and her husband, Tony, a dog whisperer who claims to
have been raised by poodles in his early years.
