“Adopt a Little New Yorker Today” Campaign
Launched
January 2003 - New York City –- The Mayor's Alliance
for NYC Animals, a coalition of 40 animal rescues and
shelters, has enlisted the services of the all-volunteer
media organization Rational Animal to campaign for NYC’s
homeless animals.
With a volunteer base of over 60 individuals, Rational
Animal is a NYC-based organization of professionals
who are committed to helping wild and domestic animals
by developing television, radio, online and print media
campaigns.
Rational Animal volunteers bring a wealth of talent
and creative vitality to the campaign working in teams
that include creative directors, editors, engineers,
public relations experts, talent, veterinarians, videographers,
writers, fundraisers and others.
"The response by the community to volunteer media
skills to campaign for NYC's homeless animals has been
phenomenal,” says Susan Brandt, founder of Rational
Animal. “For many, joining Rational Animal was
the gig they were looking for, a chance to contribute
their talents to help animals.”
Why help NYC animals now?
Euthanasia is now used on 80% of animals entering the
NYC shelter system and with 200 dogs, puppies, cats
and kittens abandoned by the community every day, the
Center for Animal Care and Control has the despicable
job of euthanizing approximately 175 animals every day
because not enough people are adopting or helping to
control animal population. Currently only 20% of the
community seeking companion animals go to rescues or
shelters.
"While these statistics are distressing, Rational
Animal’s campaign for the Mayor’s Alliance
will create uplifting messages that engage and empower
the community to take action and contribute towards
the no-kill goal," says Susan Muska, Rational Animal’s
media strategist who is also an award-winning filmmaker
and assistant professor at Columbia University.
Jane Hoffman, the president of the Mayor’s Alliance
for NYC Animals, emphasizes that increasing adoptions
in the five boroughs would reach the no-kill goal for
adoptable dogs and cats. "It's heartbreaking,"
says Hoffman "that so many animals are euthanized
each year in New York City. We're sure that when New
Yorkers are aware of the homeless animals available,
they will choose to adopt from shelters and rescues."
