Visitors enjoy holiday tribute to those who help ensure
safe havens for animals.
New York City, December 30, 2002 -- The Gingerbread
Homes for Animals Tribute completes a successful first
year of gingerbread building activity with a display
at Central Park’s Dana Discovery Center, December
31 – January 16, 2003, 10am-5pm Tuesdays through
Sundays.
The Gingerbread Homes for Animals Tribute is a project
initiated by Rational Animal, a new animal welfare organization
based in Greenwich Village. The project brings communities
together to dream about the perfect animal dwellings
of favorite animals and then uses homemade gingerbread,
icing and candies to build them.
The gingerbread homes are created as a tribute to those
who have made extraordinary efforts to help animals.
The Tribute aims to increase awareness about the need
to provide safe havens for animals, particularly during
the holidays when animals are given as gifts.
This past weekend, as a zoological assortment of gingerbread
dwellings was carried into the Dana Discovery Center
for exhibition set-up, children ran to see them trying
hard to resist the temptation to pluck candies from
them. The Charles A. Dana Discovery Center is one of
Central Park’s environmental education centers,
and with children’s workshops held year-round,
the Gingerbread Homes for Animals are sure to be enjoyed
by many children and adults in the Center’s main
exhibition space overlooking the Harlem Meer.
“Everyone who sees the gingerbread homes or hears
about the project wants to build one or has ideas to
make the project even bigger next year,” said
Susan Brandt, founder and president of Rational Animal.
“Next year we’ll have more communities around
the city participating in the event, including NYC’s
master bakers, and a raffle to raise money for groups
that help provide safe havens for animals in need.”
